Bio

Catherine A. Hughes is a historical musicologist whose work focuses on the construction and expression of identity through music in the twentieth century. Her research concentrates particularly on musical culture in Brussels during Belgium's Imperial period (1880–1960). Dr. Hughes's dissertation, "Branding Brussels Musically: Cosmopolitanism and Nationalism in the Interwar Years" received the 2015 Glen Haydon Award for an Outstanding Dissertation in Musicology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her work has been supported by grants UNC's Royster Society of Fellows, the Belgian American Educational Foundation, the American Musicological Society, and the Council for European Studies.
